"All I Have To Do Is Dream" - Melody & Harmony

Sorry for the delay in posting this one. I had it written out months ago but forgot to post it until today. This tune has a great parallel harmony throughout most of the song, which is very typical of the Everlys.

There are a few phrases that were difficult for me to decipher, due to the brothers' incredible blend, and also the fact they sometimes will slide between the notes - like on the "you" in the phrase "Whenever I want you". They slide into the second note.

Again, I did my best to notate the actual notes being sung in the recording. If you find anything that needs correcting, please leave a comment and let me know.

This PDF is not the complete song as some sections are repeated. If you need the whole song form, and the rest of the lyrics, please refer to the Chords & Lyrics post.

  1. This is great! What a fun project. Thank you so much for sharing. I was confused for a little while by the key signature here, which must have been a cut and paste error. But once I figured that out, it was very useful.

    1. Hi Amber! Glad you found the chart useful. Could you let me know what you meant by the issue with key signature? I'm not sure I follow. The song is in E major, so there are 4 sharps (F#, G#, C#, and D#). If there is an error somewhere let me know so I can fix the sheet. Cheers! -Brian

  2. Could you please post the second page? I sing with a hospice choir, and they'd love to do this. Many thanks for your work!!

  3. Hello Madeling. There isn't a second page. This one-sided sheet is meant to show the melody & harmony notes for each section of the song. There's quite a bit of repetition in the song so I omitted sections that repeat. Every section of the song is covered here (the verse, the chorus, the bridge) the last measure would basically wrap back around to measure 14 (though the lyrics are of course different for verse 3). If you need the full arrangement of the song, so you can see the structure of verses/choruses/bridges, please check out the sheet found on the "Chords & Lyrics" page. I hope that helps!

  4. Dear Mr. Slope,

These charts are great, and thank you very much for posting them. Two days ago I came up with exactly the same plan you had--that is, to begin to learn harmony singing by copying the Everly Brothers. I was prepared to do the transcribing myself but thought that by now there would be lots of transcriptions of their vocal lines on the Web. So far, though, yours are the only ones I've seen. So again, thanks very much for putting them up (cool that you made a dedicated site for them).

    A couple of points:

    1. My favorite Everly tunes (maybe) are Crying in the Rain, Let It Be Me, and Why Worry. You haven't posted any of those yet, but please let me know if you have done any of them and plan to share the PDFs. If not, I'll go ahead and work on the transcriptions, and will be happy to send them to you if I get anywhere.

    2. Would you be willing to share your original files from your transcription program? Or exported MusicXML files (probably better for me, I'm on Windows)? I'm hoping to arrange some of these tunes for 3-part harmony and it would be great not to have to start from scratch with the notation.

I don't have any of the log-ins you use (LiveJournal etc) but would be happy to make one if we do exchange files.

    Thank you,
    Steve C

  5. Hello Steve C - Thank you so much for your comments. Yes, I was so surprised that no one else had already done this. I have not transcribed the other songs you mentioned. As you can probably see, I haven't tackled any new tunes in a while. I'm happy to send you any files. I used a free program called "MuseScore" that works on both mac and pc. It does look like it has an option to save in MusicXML format. I can post those files for you. Were there particular songs you wanted or would you just like all of them?

  6. Hi again, Steve C - So I went back and looked at my original files and the bulk of them were actually created in a free version of Finale (Not MuseScore which is what I currently use). I exported all files as MusicXML and put them in the same folder where all the other PDF files live. Feel free to download them: http://briandemski.com/public/everlys/
